Coker University was founded in 1908 as a liberal arts college for women and is today a co-ed institution. The campus is home to the Cecelia Coker Bell Art Gallery and the Elizabeth Boatwright Coker Performing Arts Center, which includes theaters and the Stein Gallery of pre-Columbian and oriental artifacts. The 70,000 sq. ft. DeLoach athletic facility opened in 2014.

The Dillon County Theater is one of the few remaining examples of Spanish Colonial architecture in the state and is on the National Register of Historic Places.
