This seven-county region, named for the original Native America Pee Dee Indians who inhabited it long ago and subsequently the Pee Dee Rivers, still offers the natural wonders that attracted the Native Americans and early settlers. A sparkling gem of nature’s best, Pee Dee Country has a unique combination of scenic parks and natural areas as well as a history spanning both Revolutionary and Civil War times, reflected in its wonderfully preserved historic homes, plantations and buildings.

With Memorial Day coming up, there’s perhaps no better time to visit some of the local military memorial sites in the Pee Dee—like Bishopville Flag Park, Lee County Veterans Museum, and the Florence National Cemetery & Stockade.
💠 Bishopville Flag Park flies 11 flags: six of which honor our men and women in uniform, four which represent governments, and the final one a POW/MIA flag.
💠 The Lee County Veterans Museum features exhibits that trace conflicts from the American Revolutionary War to present conflicts. Every branch of service history is represented.
💠 And the Florence National Cemetery & Stockade is the burial place for Union soldiers who died while being held at the Florence Stockade. The first woman to be buried in a National Cemetery, Florena Budwin, is interred at the Florence National Cemetery, which contains the remains of veterans from all major US conflicts. Just south of the cemetery is the site of the stockade.

🌚 It’s National Space Day, an opportune time to highlight the awesome planetarium located right here in the Pee Dee. Located at Francis Marion University in Florence, the fully digital planetarium has been serving the Pee Dee since 1978 and is FREE to the public. You can schedule a visit or attend one of their scheduled public shows.

Another cool site to check out during your visit to the Pee Dee is the Ronald E. McNair Memorial and Life History Center. The center is a museum dedicated to the life of Dr. McNair, an astronaut and physicist from the Pee Dee (Lake City) who died in the 1986 Challenger Space Shuttle explosion.

Not much has changed at Cooper's Country Store in the nearly 90 years it’s been serving the Pee Dee Region. Locals and visitors can still look forward to the same high-quality, locally grown food and homemade goods, as well as some of the area’s best BBQ.
Stop in this historic convenience store & fuel station during your next excursion to the Pee Dee!
